STRUCTURES

Amphitheatre and Soundshell

The existing amphitheatre will be partially covered with a new roof structure. The shape of the cover makes reference to the leaf forms of the park setting. This shape can also be interpreted as a boat-like form referring to the seaside context. The design is singular and iconic. It will be a special feature unique to Caroline Bay.

The amphitheatre structure floats above the existing main seating area of the amphitheatre without requiring pillar supports that could obscure views to the Soundshell. It will be constructed from arched steel beams and extruded metal cladding. The form of the design also allows for views from the footpath behind the amphitheatre to the beach.

A covered extension will be added to the Soundshell. This structure will echo the shape and materials of the proposed amphitheatre cover.

Beach Changing Rooms with Toilets

At the beach end of the Piazza Promenade it is proposed that beach changing sheds and toilets be constructed. This structure will have multiple uses. It will also be used as a beach viewing platform and interpretation feature. A suggested theme for the design of this structure is the beached shipwreck of the Benvenue. The structure will be set into a dune landform with changing sheds beneath, accessed at beach level. A beach promenade section of the promenade will ramp up to the roof of the structure at the top of sand dune level. Stretched sails will provide shade at this upper level.

Wheel Park

Near the existing main car park, a 'Wheel Park' will be constructed. This will cater for skateboarders and roller blade users. This location is clearly visible from the nearby car park making informal surveillance and general viewing possible.

Marine Parade Concession Buildings

The opportunity is to be provided for the erection of concession buildings along Marine Parade as part of the beach promenade structure. These would be erected in response to demand for business activities such as boat or cycle hire, food stalls etc. These structures would be built on piles with decks, steps and ramps to the beach. Combined with tree planting along Marine Parade these buildings would create a sense of enclosure from the beach, mirroring planting at the other end of the beach.

Appearance of Buildings

  1. The entrance to the Hall Building will be relocated to the northeast façade opening onto the proposed Caroline Bay Hall Lawn. Threshold treatment at the entrance will provide a formalised arrival area for vehicle drop-off.
  2. Caroline Bay Association Rooms and Lounge will be renovated on the exterior to integrate their appearance with the Edwardian character of other buildings at Caroline Bay
  3. The Entertainment Complex will be upgraded to improve the exterior appearance. This would include replacing the light fittings and painting the exterior of the building.

Demolition of Existing Tennis Pavilion

The existing tennis court pavilion is currently in very poor condition and is not used. For these reasons it will be demolished and replaced with tree planting and grass.

Demolition of Old Changing Rooms

The existing changing rooms located in the open green space area of Caroline Bay will be demolished. These facilities are too far from the beach and will be replaced with new toilets as described above.

Demolition of Old Kitchen Building

The existing kitchen building beside the children's paddling pool has suffered from vandalism and this has resulted in the building being locked up for most of the time. Consequently it has had little use and is to be demolished.

Toilet Facilities

will be provided in the following locations:

  1. New toilets at the end of the Piazza Promenade.
  2. Existing toilets near roller-skating rink will be upgraded.
  3. Existing toilets within the Loop Road area will be replaced with 6 modern unisex toilets.
  4. Existing toilets near the Aviary will be upgraded.
  5. Existing toilets in the Caroline Bay Association Building.

Caretakers House

The old caretakers house will be demolished to make way for a formal garden associated with the existing Tearooms building. This building and garden will operate as a private function facility.

Saltwater pool / Leisure Centre

As part of the landscape Development Plan, a suggested location for the proposed Saltwater Pool/Leisure Centre has been identified at the port end of the Bay. Set partially within sand dunes and parkland, and framed by the beach promenade and access road, the proposed pool complex can integrate into the proposed circulation network. Proposed new car parks at the eastern end of the beach will cater for pool visitors. This location builds on the architects' concept proposal and creates further architectural design opportunities. There is space for future expansion of this facility to the west or the south.

Signage

The introduction of custom made signage that expresses the colourful seaside character of Caroline Bay will add a sense of overall continuity and orientation for visitors to the Bay.

Petanque, Bumper Boats and Maze Area

This area will be softened with planting that provides an appropriate setting for these activities.

Seating

There are many styles of seats in the Bay. The Timaru City family of outdoor furniture is appropriate for the Bay, as older seats need replacement.
