Drainage Compliance Monitoring
Monitoring comprises of:
(a) Tradewaste discharge monitoring.
(b) Monitoring of Commercial Premises.
(c) Compliance of Discharge Consent Monitoring.
(d) Reticulation Flow Monitoring.
(e) Oxidation Pond Monitoring.
(f) Inflow/Infiltration Survey Monitoring.
(g) Environmental Response Unit.
Tradewaste
There are a number of industries that are registered to discharge to the public sewerage system and pay tradewaste charges.
Monitoring of Commercial Premises
Monitoring of Commercial Premises encompasses food processing and fast food outlets, and activities that would require separation methods for wastewater and stormwater before discharge to the public sewer and stormwater systems.
Compliance of Discharge Consent Monitoring
Timaru District Council holds specific consents to discharge waste water and stormwater.
The sewage discharge consents require monthly monitoring. The results of the samples are furnished to Environment Canterbury (Ecan).
Reticulation Flow Monitoring
Reticulation flow monitoring comprises the collection of flow data in the various sewer and stormwater gravity and pressure mains to support analysis of theoretical volumes at critical points in the systems and a means of monitoring the performance of pumps.
Oxidation Pond Monitoring
Sewage oxidation ponds require management to ensure they operate to produce the required water quality at discharge. Ponds at Temuka, Geraldine, Pleasant Point are monitored each Monday, Wednesday and Friday for Dissolved oxygen, pH and temperature.
Inflow/Infiltration Survey Programme.
Private Drainage
The inflow/infiltration programme involves an inspection of the private sewer and stormwater systems for
a) direct entry of stormwater to the sewer system ,
b) that gully traps and fresh air inlets at the buchan are raised as to not allow surface water to enter the system
c) that the drains are not faulty, ie, broken gully traps, pipes, buchans.
d) that roof top runoff is collected and discharged appropriately
Public Drainage
Environmental Response Unit.
The Resource Management Act states a need to contain spillages of contaminates to prevent or mitigate their effects on the environment (natural waters). The Monitoring section provides a 24 hour response capability to deal with, and/or work along side other emergency services to contain and arrange collection and disposal of contaminates likely to be harmful to the environment.
