Local Elections for city, district and regional Councils, District Health Boards and Licensing Trusts will be held on Saturday 9 October 2010. Voting is now underway in the Timaru District elections, with voting papers being delivered to district residents between 17 and 22 September. There were four unopposed elections, as follows:
- Timaru District Council – Pleasant Point – Temuka Ward
- Timaru District Council – Geraldine Ward
- Timaru District Council – Temuka Community Board
- Timaru District Council – Geraldine Community Board

In Timaru District, elections will be held for:

2) Councillors (10 Councillors)
- Seven members to represent the Timaru Ward
- Two members to represent the Pleasant Point-Temuka Ward
- One member to represent the Geraldine Ward
3) Community Boards
- Six members to represent the Geraldine Community Board
- Five members to represent the Pleasant Point Community Board
- Four members to represent the Temuka Community Board

Seven members elected at large
Geraldine Licensing Trust
- Six members to represent the Geraldine Licensing Trust district
Elections are held every three years always on the second Saturday in October. The elections will be held by postal vote.
The Timaru District Council and Geraldine Licensing Trust elections are conducted under the First Past the Post (FPP) system. The South Canterbury District Health Board elections are conducted using the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system. More information on the STV system can be found at www.stv.govt.nz
The elections are conducted under the Local Electoral Act 2001, the Local Electoral Regulations 2001, NZ Public Health and Disability Act 2000, Sale of Liquor Act 1989 and the Local Government Act 2002.

The Canterbury Regional Council (Environment Canterbury) elections have been cancelled for 2010 as a result of the Environment Canterbury (Temporary Commissioners and Improved Water Management) Act 2010.
