European settlement began here in the late 1830s with whaling stations being established and later sheep stations. Immigrant vessels began arriving from 1859, and very quickly the region began to change as settlements, roads and farms sprang up.
Our exhibitions explore how and when settlement occurred, the importance of the artificial harbour built at Timaru, local shipwrecks and more.
Collections include a number of early artefacts as well as a wealth of documentary items, including photographs, maps, books and archival items.
