Planning Information

The Council's Planning Unit is responsible for the following activities and services:

The Timaru District Council's District Plan, prepared under the Resource Management Act 1991, was made operative on 8 March 2005.

The Timaru District Plan determines resource management issues, objectives, policies, methods and rules which control and manage the development of the District over the next 10-15 years.

The District Plan zones the District and regulates what can be built or developed, and where activities can occur within the zones, based on sustainable management.

As part of its statutory obligation under the Resource Management Act 1991, the Planning Unit administers the District Plan for Timaru.

Urban Street Numbers

Council allocates urban street numbers for the urban areas of Timaru City, and the towns of Cave, Geraldine, Pareora, Pleasant Point, Temuka and Winchester.

RAPID Numbering

Post Box RAPID is short for Rural Area Property Identification. All rural dwellings are given an Identification Plate based on the location of their access point on the road boundary.

The purpose of the RAPID system is to ensure quick and accurate location of rural properties when required by emergency services. Many rural property owners have incorporated their RAPID identification into their postal address.

Copies of the RAPID map book for Timaru District are available for purchase from the Planning Unit, and from Council's service centres in Geraldine and Temuka.

District Plan

Plan 3 Every Council in New Zealand is legally required to prepare a District Plan under the Resource Management Act 1991.

Councils throughout the country are at varying stages of the extensive public consultation process which is required for the preparation of a District Plan. Timaru District Council District Plan was made operative on 8 March 2005.
