Materials for historical and genealogical research at the South Canterbury Museum
The South Canterbury Museum collects, preserves and makes available objects and information regarding the natural and human history of the South Canterbury region. The following items held by the Museum are of particular use in researching family history.
What sort of material is held?
The Museum's collection's are catalogued on a collections management database and includes archives, local history publications, photographs, newspapers, maps, plans and much more. We have also produced (and continue to produce) a range of databases and finding aids covering such things as birth, death and marriage notices, church records and rate rolls - many of which are now available online - see Online Databases (note: still underconstruction but functional enough to use).
All these materials can be accessed in the Museums' research library during archive hours. Research can also be undertaken on your behalf if you cannot visit the Museum itself. Please see our Fees and Charges if you wish to take advantage of this service.
