The Council's aim is to have safe buildings and pools within the Timaru District.
This starts with all new building work obtaining the necessary approvals and consents and then being built to comply with the approved plans.
For existing buildings, there are a number of ways Council can become involved:
- Through applications for building consent for additions and alterations
- Through applications for certificates of acceptance
- Through building or pool inspections
- Through complaints
- Through notification from another authority
There is the added requirement to comply with the current standards as identified in the Earthquake Prone, Dangerous and Insanitary Buildings Policy if a certain percentage of new building work is to be undertaken on an earthquake prone building.
If you have weathertight issues on completed building work, refer to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's site on Weathertightness for useful information.
