Application
for Licence to Store Dangerous Goods
What are Dangerous Goods
"Dangerous Goods" are those substances defined as dangerous
goods under the provisions of the Dangerous Goods Act 1974.
The Timaru District Council Environmental Health Unit carries
out the following functions with regard to dangerous goods:
- Annual licensing of 290 approximately premises where
dangerous goods are stored.
- Annual monitoring visits to all of the premises licensed.
- Response to inquiries relating to the storage and/or use
of dangerous goods.
- Perusal of building consent applications for matters relating
to dangerous goods and follow-up action as required.
- Perusal of resource consent applications referred to Dangerous
Goods Inspector by the Planning Unit and follow-up action
as required.
In practical terms the function relates to monitoring and
licensing functions in regard to such things as petrol, diesel,
LPG gas, solvents, plus a range of other substances.
In the near future the hazardous substance provisions of
the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 will come
into force and Council's role will be as detailed by that
Act. Dangerous Goods licensing and monitoring will continue
during a transitional period of up to five years but after
that time controls and monitoring will in general be carried
out by other agencies.
