About Planning Maps
Use Planning Maps to search our District Plan
Maps by following these steps:
1. Launch Planning Maps.
2. Click the appropriate area on the green map.
3. Clicking an area on the green map will either open a new map screen or the map itself, depending on how much information is contained in the area selected.
4. If you receive a new map screen, narrow your search by clicking one of the map blocks indicated.
5. All maps open as PDFs and contain links to any Schedule of Designations associated with that map.
6. The map Legend can also be found in the PDF.
7. Find the property on the appropriate map, the key explains the symbols on the map.

There may also be a schedule of significant trees and heritage buildings, structures and sites.
8. All properties are within a Zone.

To find out what that Zone provides for, go to Part D of Volume I and locate the appropriate Zone.

Within each Zone are set out the policies and rules that are particular to that Zone.

9. Part D(6) contains General Rules which include:

Example of Plan Maps

The Timaru District Council’s District Plan, prepared under the Resource Management Act 1991, was made operative on 8 March 2005.

The Timaru District Plan determines resource management issues, objectives, policies, methods and rules which control and manage the development of the District over the next 10-15 years. The District Plan zones the District and regulates what can be built or developed, and where activities can occur within the zones, based on sustainable management. learn more ....

Unless you have a high speed internet connection, we suggest due to the size of the PDF files you save them to your hard drive before opening.

What do the Planning Maps cover?

The Planning Maps cover the Timaru District identifying the zoning of all areas, all public roads, and any designations, heritage buildings, structures and sites, significant trees, Canterbury Regional Council stopbanks and transmission lines.

Coastal areas include the coastal marine area boundary, and the 100 year coastal erosion line and inundation line where they occur.

How do I use the District Plan?

The Timaru District Plan for the Timaru District is made up of two volumes. Volume I is located here as pdf files containing the Issues, Objective, Policies, Methods and Rules including the Zone Rules and General Rules as well as the definitions .

The second part containing planning maps, keys, and schedules which explain the maps.

When was the District Plan approved?

The District Plan was approved by the Timaru District Council on 22 February 2005 and was deemed to be operative on 8 March 2005.

What happens if there is a plan change?

This District Plan may be the subject of a plan change(s) within the next 10 years of its life.

These plan changes will be publicly notified.
