The young artists of South Canterbury will once again take over the walls at 49 Wai-iti Road for the Rotary Timaru North Artarama from August 15.

Since the late 1970s, Rotary Timaru North and the gallery has inspired creativity with Artarama, which has now become one of the region's longest-running celebration of student art. Showcasing hundreds of works by Year 1 to Year 13 students from schools across South Canterbury, this year around 400 artworks will be on display with outstanding student artists being recognised across a range of categories.

Rotary Timaru North committee member Robbie Jackson said Artarama was about much more than awards.

“Artarama has always been about giving young people the confidence that comes from seeing their work valued. Established more than 30 years ago by a Timaru North Rotarian, Artarama has grown into a much-loved tradition that continues to celebrate the creativity and talent of South Canterbury students. For many students, this is the first time they’ve exhibited in a public gallery, and that experience can stay with them for life.

“Rotary believes strong communities invest in young people. Supporting creativity is one way we do that. Every artwork tells a story, and every student who participates contributes to the cultural life of South Canterbury.”

Aigantighe Art Gallery Exhibitions Curator Izzy Hillman said the exhibition remained one of the gallery's most anticipated annual community events.

“Artarama reminds us that galleries aren’t only places to preserve history, they’re also places where future artists begin. Every year the exhibition fills the gallery with fresh ways of seeing the world, and it’s a privilege to share that creativity with our community.”

“The exhibition celebrates imagination, experimentation, and the confidence to make something new. It’s inspiring to see so many young people contributing their voices and perspectives through art.”

The exhibition highlights the creativity of our tamariki (children) and rangatahi (young adults) through mediums such as painting and drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and mixed media.

“Artarama showcases not only technical ability but imagination, curiosity, and the unique perspectives of the district's young people. Visitors are encouraged to explore the exhibition throughout its run and experience the remarkable diversity of work on show,” Hillman said.
