Welcome to your courtside seat

Every month, we’ll bring you the latest updates on the Aorangi Stadium redevelopment—your courtside view of what’s happening!

On-site stadium works kick off

From Monday, 1 September, the transformation of the stadium at Aorangi Park officially gets underway. Our design and-build partner, Thompson Construction, will take possession of the site and begin the first stage of work on this major redevelopment.

This $24.2 million project will deliver a strengthened existing stadium, a brand-new eight-court stadium, and a modern link building that includes a gym, function room, and upgraded changing facilities. These improvements are designed to meet the needs of today’s sports users while creating a venue that can host major events for years to come.

The first stage will see the current stadium and netball courts closed for drainage work and site preparation. The north end of the building, which currently houses the foyer and function areas, will be demolished to make way for the new link building.

This new space will connect the old and new stadiums and include a gym, showers, toilets, and a function suite with views into both stadiums.

The upgrade to the existing stadium should be in full swing by October, with the build of the new eight-court stadium beginning this coming January. The project is still on track to be delivered within the budget and completed in 2027.

Fundraising group kicks off $2.4m drive

Alongside construction, a dedicated fundraising group made up of elected members and community stakeholders has launched a campaign to raise $2.4 million to support the development. A workshop was held in July to explore options, and an external committee is now leading the charge to reach this target.

Traffic Changes on Site

With the closure of the stadium and adjacent courts, there will be significant traffic changes during the redevelopment period.

Access to facilities at the rear of the site, such as the cricket oval and running track, will now be through the first gate, which has been changed to two-way traffic.

You can still reach the main car park via the second gate on Morgans Road. A temporary walkway will run alongside the front hockey turf to provide access to the rear of the site.

The third gate will operate as an exit only, and the road across the front of the stadium between the two car parks will be closed to vehicles.

Traffic flows may change as the project progresses, so please follow all signage when using the park.
