#CULTURE + LIFESTYLE

A new generation of cultural leaders will be inspired this June (23) as students from across the region gather for the upcoming GLAM Careers Event—a hands-on, immersive introduction to career pathways within the Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (GLAM) sector.

Hosted at the Aigantighe Art Gallery, the event represents a collaborative initiative between regional institutions and education providers, designed to foster deeper engagement between young people and the cultural heritage of their community.

Structured to maximise interaction, insight, and accessibility, the event brings together a wide cross-section of GLAM professionals—curators, educators, librarians, and archivists—offering students a rare, behind-the-scenes look into one of New Zealand’s most dynamic and vital sectors.

“This event is about opening doors and showing students that there’s a place for their curiosity and creativity in the cultural sector,” Izzy Hillman, Exhibitions Curator at Aigantighe Art Gallery and the event’s MC and organiser said.

“GLAM careers are incredibly diverse—whether you're passionate about history, art, technology, or community service—there’s a path here worth exploring. We want young people to feel inspired, informed, and empowered to see themselves in these roles.”

The program begins with a panel discussion featuring professionals from across the sector. The conversation will explore career journeys, sector trends, and the evolving role of GLAM institutions in today's world. Panelists bring both emerging and experienced voices to the table, offering insight into the many ways individuals can contribute to cultural life and public knowledge.

Students will then take part in a fast-paced, engaging speed-networking session designed to foster genuine dialogue and connection. In small groups, they will meet professionals from a wide range of disciplines, asking questions, gaining practical insight, and hearing first-hand about the challenges and rewards of working in the GLAM sector. This structure ensures that every student can engage with multiple professionals, broadening their understanding of what these careers look like in practice.

The participating professionals represent institutions including the Aigantighe Art Gallery, South Canterbury Museum, Timaru District Libraries, and the Timaru District Council Archives. Their expertise spans curatorship, education, conservation, records management, and more— highlighting the breadth of career opportunities within the field.

At its core, the GLAM Careers Event is built around the students—encouraging them to explore their interests, ask questions, and see the sector not as something distant or abstract, but as a place where their voices, skills, and passions can thrive. It reflects a sector-wide commitment to cultivating future talent and creating meaningful pathways for youth to contribute to the cultural fabric of Aotearoa.

Careers teachers can book their students into the event by emailing gallery@timdc.govt.nz.
