South Canterbury Art Society Annual Exhibition and Alpine Energy Awards to Open at Aigantighe Gallery

Over 130 works by local artists will line the walls of Aigantighe Art Gallery, with this year’s South Canterbury Art Society Annual Exhibition featuring guest artists with strong links to galleries in the community.

Gallery owners, Polly Rowe from Red Bird Gallery and Debbie Templeton-Page from York Street Gallery alongside Aigantighe Art Gallery Assistant Diana Peneamene will be guest artists to the event, with the judging panel of the show led by Head of the Visual Arts Department at Craighead Diocesan School Gala Kirke.

“This year’s exhibition is a compelling showcase of the talent and passion of our local artists, making it a must-attend event for all,” Aigantighe Art Gallery Exhibitions Curator Isobel Hillman said.

This was the first year the Art Society has implemented online entries for this year’s exhibition, enabling the curatorial team to preview selected works in advance.

“I am genuinely excited by the impressive calibre of submissions, which reflect the remarkable talent flourishing in South Canterbury,” Hillman said.

The SCAS Annual Exhibition is open to all artists, providing a platform for them to showcase their work and compete alongside their peers. Submissions are rigorously selected and judged, with winners receiving prestigious awards on opening night.

“This event not only highlights local talent but also celebrates the vibrant artistic culture that thrives in South Canterbury,” she said.

Visitors can look forward to an impressive collection featuring a diverse range of artworks, including paintings and works on paper. This is a great opportunity for people to purchase quality local works for their homes that celebrate the spirit of South Canterbury.

“We invite everyone to join us in celebrating the artistic achievements of South Canterbury and supporting our local creatives,” Hillman said.

The South Canterbury Arts Society Annual Exhibition, featuring the esteemed Alpine Energy Awards running from 28th September to 27th October 2024.

The Gala Opening and Prize Giving will take place on Friday, 27th September at 6:30 PM, marking the official launch of this highly anticipated event.
