The South Canterbury Arts Society 80th Annual Awards and Art Exhibition, opened Saturday. The exhibition brought together 92 works in painting, sculpture, and mixed media, selected through a competitive process, showcasing the best of South Canterbury.

South Canterbury Arts Society Group President Tom Trower said this 80th annual exhibition honours past members and artists and adds to the visual arts legacy of South Canterbury.

“Founded in 1895, the aim of the art society was to promote the study, practice and enjoyment of fine arts in South Canterbury,” Tom said.

“From start the annual exhibition provides and important occasion for artists, both professional and amateur to display and sell their works.”

Aigantighe Art Gallery Exhibitions curator Izzy Hillman said the exhibition is more than just celebrating individual works.

“It’s about recognizing the voices and creativity of the regions artists,” Izzy said.

“As a cultural institution of South Canterbury, it is a privilege to share these works and highlight the diversity and vitality of South Canterbury’s artistic community, from established practitioners to emerging talent.”

Featuring a wide selection of painting, sculpture, and mixed media, the exhibition reflects the richness of contemporary practice in the region.

“This show is a special chance for people to see the incredible talent we have here in South Canterbury,” Izzy said.
