The Timaru Theatre Royal redevelopment project has reached a major milestone with the appointment of a Theatre Manager.

Timaru District Council Chief Executive Nigel Trainor said Scott Gaddes’ appointment signals the Theatre Royal’s focus on strong leadership and a warm, welcoming experience for artists and audiences.

“Scott’s background across technical, operational and front-of-house delivery will be a real asset as we bring high-quality live performance and community events to Timaru.”

“He’s returning home to New Zealand after most recently working as Technical and Operations Manager at South Mill Arts, a theatre just north of London,” Mr Trainor said.

“In that role, he worked with performers, community groups, staff and volunteers to deliver a wide programme of productions and events.”

Before moving to the UK, Mr Gaddes held several roles across New Zealand’s arts sector, including Theatre Manager at Centrestage Theatre in Auckland. He has also been Business Director for Stage It Productions and worked with the event delivery team at Auckland Live, supporting major events and performances across Auckland venues.

Mr Gaddes said he’s excited to join the Timaru Theatre Royal team and make Timaru his home.

“Theatre has a unique ability to bring people together. I’m looking forward to working alongside local groups, performers, supporters and audiences to ensure the Theatre Royal continues to thrive as a welcoming home for the arts in South Canterbury.”

Mr Gaddes will start in mid-May 2026, ahead of the refurbished Timaru Theatre Royal opening in early April 2027.
