Talk of the Citytown - Issue 3

#INFRASTRUCTURE MATTERS

Where are things at with the Programme?

The CityTown team are continuing to progress opportunities across a number of streams, including the minor enhancements, enabling private sector, and infrastructure renewal workstreams.

These workstreams are being led by respective members of the CityTown programme and work is well underway in coordinating and delivering each tranche.

Work is continuing on refining the draft masterplan. The masterplan will offer a roadmap for public development for city streetscapes, to ensure we can support inner city growth and enable use change, and it will also inform future council investments in the CBD through coming long term plans.

Timaru District Council has been granted $300,000 in government funding that will provide a boost to conversations about the future of Strathallan Corner.

The council was granted funds from the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund to redevelop the Strathallan Corner toilet block.

This funding will enable us to align this toilet upgrade with work on a new and redesigned civic space at Strathallan Corner. Think an open green space or patio space, seating, a busking area, or public art display.

While this idea is being explored, if you have any thoughts or ideas on the future of Strathallan Corner we’d like to hear it!

Further to our previous newsletter, you may recall we applied a new high-tactile non-slip tile compound outside The Oxford building on the corner of Stafford and George Streets. Word so far has been that this product is proving its worth, and as a result we will be applying this product on the tiles outside the library, and a larger portion of the inner city along Stafford Street from George Street up to the intersection of Church and Strathallan Streets.

For some background on the tiles, visit:https://www.timaru.govt.nz/services/roads-parking-and-transport/timarus-miles-of-tiles

We all know the view from the Piazza. The mix of golden sand, green lawn and snow capped mountains is one of Timaru’s iconic views.

Soon there will be a new way of enjoying it. We’re just about to install a pair of viewfinder binoculars so you can have a close-up look at the area, and you don’t even need to drop 50c to make them work!

What’s coming next?

In the September update we’ll share further information about our non-slip tile application outside the library and along a portion of Stafford Street, as well as hopefully finally showcase a vibrant and interactive installation coming to Stafford Street we’ve been patiently working on behind the scenes. Stay tuned!
