Aorangi Stadium upgrade

Project Updates

Aorangi Stadium Redevelopment

Work is underway to redevelop the Aorangi Stadium, known as the home of sport in Timaru, as its hosts facilities for sports such as netball, basketball, volleyball, hocky, athletics and cricket.

The redevelopment will include upgrading the existing stadium, and buildng a new eight-court indoor building on the space which previously held the netball courts. There will also be a link building connecting the two indoor stadiums together.

Why is this redevelopment happening?

The stadium upgrade was included into the 2021-2031 Long Term Plan (LTP), which rolled over into the 2024-2034 LTP and 10 year capital works programme.

At Timaru District Council's Ordinary Council Meeting held on Tuesday May 6 202, it was resolved to accept the design and price submitted by Thompson Engineering (TEL) for a design and build contract for the stadium upgrade and expansion.

As part of discussions in the Long-Term Plan 2021-2031 it was deemed to be a strategic initiative to improve the regions sports and community infrastructure by upgrading an expanding the indoor stadium. Also as part of future proofing infrastrcuture the upgraded stadium would be better suited as a disaster recovery centre.

The redevelopment will make the facilities stronger, more efficient, and sustainable for the long term. The new design creates a high spec, connected, practical space for sports, events, and, if needed, a disaster recovery centre.
