Key dates for the 2019 local elections are:

|Friday 19 July 2019||Nominations open. Electoral Roll opens for inspection.|
|Friday 16 August 2019||Nominations close at 12 NOON. Electoral Roll closes.|
|Wed 21 August 2019 (as soon as practicable)||Public notice of day of election, candidates’ names|
|20 - 25 September 2019||Delivery of voting documents|
|20 September – 12 October 2019||Voting and Special voting period. Early processing period.|
|12 October 2019||Election Day (voting closes at 12 Noon). Progress/Preliminary results announced.|

The elections you can vote in depend on where you live in the district. The elections are held by postal vote.
The Timaru District Council and Geraldine Licensing Trust elections are conducted under the First Past the Post (FPP) system. The South Canterbury District Health Board elections are conducted using the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system. More information on the STV system can be found at www.stv.govt.nz.
