Son of John and Margaret Hepburn (Maungati) is a distinguished multi-discipline New Zealand Motor Sport Champion. At 60 years old he remains an active figure in the New Zealand racing scene as of 2026.
Racing Career Overview
Hepburn’s career is unique for his high-level success across three distinct types of racing:
Motorcycles:
He began racing in 1979. In1992 received the Golden Handlebars Championship - selected as the Best All Round NZ Motorcycle Racer of that year.
In 2000 John set a New Zealand land speed record of 191.08mph (near Edendale, Southland, this stood until 2022).
He and achieved a world record in 1999 at the Isle of Man TT, earning six replicas (two silver, four bronze) in six starts. An ankle injury eventually ended his professional career.
Super Trucks: He transitioned to Truck Racing, winning multiple national titles, including his first NZ Super Truck Championship in 2007.
Muscle Cars: In recent years, he has dominated the Mobil 1 Mainland Muscle Car series.
Recent Activities (2022 – 2026)
Business: Hepburn sold his business in September 2022, Timaru Metal Recyclers which he had owned for 22 years.
