Alcohol Licence Public Notification

Liquor Control

Pursuant to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Regulations 2013 all applications for alcohol licences (new, renewals, variations etc) need to be notified by way of a public notice.

From 1 July 2019 the public notices for all applications in Timaru, Mackenzie and Waimate will be published on this website.  The advertisements will remain on this site for 25 working days*. If there are non-working days during this period the closing date for public notice periods throughout the year (including the days between 20 December and 15 January) will be extended.

Under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 a ‘working day’ means a day of the week other than -

  1. a Saturday, a Sunday, Waitangi Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, the Sovereign’s birthday, and Labour Day; and
  2. if Waitangi Day or Anzac Day falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, the following Monday; and
  3. a day in the period commencing on 20 December in any year and ending with 15 January in the following year.

We will no longer be publishing notices in the local newspapers (The Waimate Trader or the Timaru Courier). This means that you will only need to visit this webpage to see if there’s an application that interests you.

Applicants are also required to display a copy of the public notice on the front of the actual premises so it can be viewed from the outside at all times. This will be provided by the Alcohol Licensing Team.

If you have a query about an application, the public notice or the notification process, please contact the Alcohol Licensing Team on (03) 687 7200. We can also arrange for a viewing of the application.

Members of the public can object to an application for an alcohol licence in some cases. Your objection must be made within 25 working days after the date of the public notice being made (refer date in register for each application).

Viewing of Applications

Applications (which include a plan of the premises) may be viewed in person however an appointment is required to ensure a team member is available to assist.

Viewing is available during ordinary office hours with the Alcohol Licensing Team, these are Monday to Friday, at the office of the Timaru District Council located at the 2 King George Place, Timaru.

Public notices will be removed immediately following the closing date stated in the register. If an application does not appear on the register this could be due to the 25 working day period have lapsed.

*As of 31st of August 2023 changes have been made increasing the objection period from 15  to 25 days.
