Building Consent Fees

Building Overview

What is the Cost of Your Building Consent?

The cost of you building consent will vary depending on the type of project, value of that work and the quality of the information submitted within the application. Typically, the cost is made up from the following components:

  • An application fee (amount dependant of the value of work)
  • The amount of technical processing time required to assess compliance
  • An estimated amount of inspections required for the project type
  • An Building Accreditation fee
  • A Code Compliance Certificate fee
  • A fee to cover the use of the consenting software and is calculated in the following way:
    • A fixed fee of $80.00 (incl GST) will be charged for projects up to the value of $125,000
    • Projects over the value of $125,000 - the fee is calculated by multiplying the value of work by 0.075%
    • An example of this calculation - value of work $600,000 x 0.075% = $450.00

The cost of your consent may also be subjected to other charges and levy's, such as:

  • Project Information Memorandum (PIM) if you have applied for one.
  • Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ) Levy:
Calculated at $1.00 per $1,000 of the project value not less than $20,000.
  • Ministry of Building, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) Levy:
Calculated at $1.75 per $1,000 of the project value not less than $65,000.

There may also be additional fees and charges if the application has other requirements such as a Compliance Schedule, Certificate for Public Use, Section 77 Certificate (building across two or more lots), natural hazards, Minor Variations, Consent Amendments and or additional inspections.

The Fees and Charges for your application will be invoiced to you once your application has been granted (prior to issuing your consent). The issuing of your consent will only happen once council has received full payment.

Payment of your consent can be made via internet banking, Eftpos or cash. The Eftpos and cash payment options can only be made at the customer services counter in the main council office at King George Place Timaru. There are options of paying off your consent invoice, however this option must be agreed to by the Building Control Manager.

There may also be additional fees identified at the end of the project (CCC stage), these may including but not limited to:

  • additional inspections over and above the original amount identified within the consent approval documents; or
  • amendments or minor variations to the consent; or
  • any authorised third party verification.
