Sewer

Environment, Waste & Water

In this section

The sewer system collects the wastewater from your household plumbing and transports it to the treatment facility where it flows through oxidation ponds.

The system is only for liquid wastes and no solids or fats should enter the system as the sewer may block.

Sewer systems only exist in

  • Timaru including the industrial areas of Washdyke and the Timaru Port
  • Geraldine
  • Pleasant Point
  • Temuka
  • Arowhenua

These individual schemes are linked via pipeline to the main wastewater treatment plant.

Industrial wastewater from Timaru is milliscreened at Aorangi Road where it combines with the domestic  effluent before being discharged 500m offshore via a submarine ocean outfall.

Urban and industrial wastewater streams each contribute about half of the flow to the ocean outfall.
