Timaru District Council has announced a major infrastructure project to replace a trunk sewer main in Temuka.
The new 1.8 km sewer main will run along Domain Avenue between Studholme Street to Murray Street and will then cross Temuka Golf Course to join with the wastewater treatment plant.
The work, which will start from the golf course end is being undertaken by Hadlee and Brunton. It will commence in December and is estimated to take six months.
Grant Hall, Timaru District Council Drainage and Water manager said that the work is part of the Temuka sewer network improvement strategy, which will eventually improve the capacity across the whole town network.
"This is part of the on-going investment in improving the Temuka sewer network. The investment is needed to both replace ageing sewer infrastructure as well as improve the network capacity, which will reduce the risk of sewer overflows in future," he said.
“The new trunk main will be installed at a lower level and steeper grade than the existing sewer, which will allow connecting pipes to be installed at steeper grades when they are renewed over time.
"The contractor will be mostly using an open cut method for laying the new sewer main which in this instance is the most cost effective method, so there is likely to be some disruption to traffic.
"However, a detailed traffic management plan will be put in place to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum and ensure road users and workers remain safe."
