Geraldine is to get a new toilet block thanks to $131,000 tourism funding from the Government.

The funding, which was announced this week by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment will enable the $181,000 project to go ahead, with the Timaru District Council contributing $50,000.

Tina Rogers, Group Manager Corporate Services said the new block would be placed next door to the existing ladies toilet on Cox Street, and would help meet increasing demand for facilities in town.

“We’re extremely pleased at this announcement, as it will enable us to deliver a piece of much needed tourism infrastructure for Geraldine.

“This has been a facility that has been requested by the community in response to a large increase in the number of bus tours and independent travelers stopping in the town. While this is positive for local businesses it was putting too much demand on the current facilities.

“As one of the major tourism centres of Timaru District, we’re pleased that we can now deliver facilities that meet the expectation of visitors to Geraldine and ensure they continue to have a positive effect on the whole town.”

The new facilities are planned to be built and open by mid-2017.
