Timaru District Council has voted to change the membership of its Audit and Risk Committee.
The membership has been changed to comprise three elected members (the Mayor, the Chair of the Commercial and Strategy Committee and one other) and two independents, providing for a greater proportion of independent oversight on the committee. The position of Deputy Chair of the Commercial and Strategy Committee will no longer be on the committee.
Timaru District Mayor, Nigel Bowen said that the Audit and Risk Committee regularly handled some of the most sensitive information that was dealt with at council.
“For reasons of fairness, and to uphold the rights of residents, this information has to be treated with the highest standards of privacy,” he said.
“We strive to be as open as possible in everything we do, but it’s important that some information is able to be discussed on a protected basis so that public and council confidence in the committee's ability to rigorously perform its function is maintained.”
The Deputy Chair of the Commercial and Strategy Committee has been excluded from attending public excluded sections of the Audit and Risk Committee.
The Audit and Risk Committee members are:
- Keiran Horne (chair, external independent appointee)
- The Mayor (Nigel Bowen)
- Chairperson of the Commercial and Strategy Committee (Cllr Peter Burt)
- Cllr Stu Piddington
- Janice Frederic (external independent appointee)
